Planer Superintendent

West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Manning Forest Products in Alberta is currently recruiting for a Planer Superintendent.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Planer Superintendent will be responsible for all aspects of Safety, Quality & Production for the Planer Mill & the Dry Kilns.

You will be required to promote, enhance, and monitor all Safety & Environmental systems and Production targets, and to meet all Grade and Trim quality standards.

You'll do:

  • Achieving production targets and goals.
  • Maintaining the highest regard for employee safety by ensuring your team is following all policies and procedures.
  • Observing / troubleshooting machine centers to ensure maximum efficiency and standards are being met for quality and production & safety.
  • Building, managing and monitoring the yearly department budget.
  • Educating your team on key metrics (production, safety, grade, trim loss, productivity, manufacturing costs).
  • An active role in assisting with maintenance planning and the continued development of our PM program and its effectiveness.
  • Effective communication with your team.
  • Team building and HR involvement with your teams.

Measures and Performance:

  • Safety – keep historical data of your department's safety and measure it for success. Communicate the results often.
  • Ensure the moral is up and that your department has good representation at our Employee Committee and our JWSSC.
  • Manage and have controls in place for maintenance and departmental costs.
  • Ensuring a world-class quality product is produced. Having above- and below-grade and trim loss measured, communicated, and in control.
  • Employee training and development ongoing.
  • Production and Downtime training and tracking in place and well communicated
  • Planer and Kiln buildings and equipment upkeep. You lead this department, so it's on you to keep all buildings and equipment maintained and in good order.

You have:

  • Good communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Leadership experience
  • A minimum of five years of industrial experience
  • Lumber grading experience
  • Planer experience, including grading knowledge
  • Knowledge of Kilns and the drying process
  • Proven leadership skills
