Legal Counsel
West Fraser is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our Vancouver Corporate Office.
Working closely with the Vice-President, General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will support West Fraser’s mill operations and corporate functions on a broad range of legal matters. This role partners across departments and operational teams, serving as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders.
The successful candidate will bring strong business judgment and a strategic approach, providing proactive, practical legal advice that supports West Fraser’s business objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer looking to transition into, or continue growing, an in-house legal career.
As a new role on a small and agile legal team, this position can be shaped to reflect the successful candidate’s strengths and experience.
What You’ll Do
- Provide timely, practical legal advice on commercial matters, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts
- Advise on corporate transactions, including internal reorganizations, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives and proactively identify and manage legal risk
- Conduct legal research and analysis, and prepare legal opinions for internal stakeholders
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal policies and procedures
- Deliver legal training to business units and promote knowledge sharing across the organization
- Provide clear, timely guidance that helps decision-makers understand and manage legal risk
- Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of legal services
Additional Areas of Support
- Assist with public company reporting requirements, including MD&A, annual and quarterly filings, and stock exchange compliance
- Support securities and corporate governance matters, including continuous disclosure obligations and regulatory filings
- Support the management of disputes, investigations and regulatory compliance matters
- Coordinate and manage the work of external counsel
What You Bring
- 3–6 years of relevant legal experience gained in a leading law firm and/or in-house environment
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia, or eligibility to obtain membership
- Strong experience in corporate/commercial law
- Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills
- Strong business judgment and the ability to provide practical, solutions-oriented legal advice
- Confidence working with senior leaders and independently representing West Fraser with third parties
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and diverse legal issues, including the ability to address novel and unexpected matters as they arise
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders
- Experience with securities laws applicable to public companies and exposure to U.S. operations are considered assets, but are not required
What We Offer
We offer a competitive base salary and annual bonus opportunity. The typical salary range for this position is $130,000 to $160,000, depending on education and relevant experience.
