Thermal Oil & Steam Specialist

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical support for West Fraser’s thermal energy systems and drying systems at our US mills. This role is an individual contributor but you must be able to earn trust and influence mill leaders and workers. This role reports to the corporate Energy Manager.

 What you will do:

• Conduct comprehensive system inspection to identify areas of concern and opportunity
• Work with operations to complete detailed safe work procedures
• Coordinate, conduct, and participate in internal and external audits of the facilities as required including pressure vessel audits
• Complete verification of safety and limit devices for proper operation
• Apply technical skills to problem-solving and root cause failure analyses
• Monitor and advise on regulations associated with safety and environmental systems
• Provide guidance and technical leadership to divisions for large maintenance projects
• Ensure thermal units are tuned for optimum efficiency and the lowest potential emissions
• Deliver developed onsite energy training programs for operators and maintenance employees
• Identify control system optimization for improved process control
• Provide outage/shutdown support
• Determine and manage critical spare parts inventory
• Ensure appropriate records are maintained at each site
• Work with contractors to ensure long-term maintenance plans are executed
• Collaborate with site managers to optimize biomass management
• Special projects and other duties as assigned.
• Become proficient in the science of drying, and assist corporate quality control experts in supporting divisions and improving drying results

 Qualifications you will need:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, Electrical Engineering, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, or similar preferred.
• Maintenance Management/Plant Engineering experience required
• 3-5 years of energy systems management experience required
• Possess strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and effective team-building skills
• Proven ability to deliver results
• Strong ability to multitask and prioritize
• Ability to manage conflict
• Strong technical background in biomass-fired thermal system operations
• Possess a strong command of regulatory requirements and experience communicating with respective regulatory agencies
• Understanding of control systems and PLC logic

Ability to travel over 70% of the time via car or plane to do site visits and meetings
