Maintenance Supervisor
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor directs and schedules his crew in a safe manner in accordance with plant policy to obtain continuity of production and optimum up-time of all equipment.
Manages a team of maintenance technicians daily; performs evaluations and developmental coaching sessions as needed for each member.
Works closely with Reliability Manager, Vibration Technician, Scheduler, and Purchasing Manager to ensure immediate risk needs are addressed, PM schedules are rigorously adhered to, and upset conditions are minimized. Communicate with the area managers/operators about issues or needs and prioritize them to fit the needs of the company.
The supervisor assists the Maintenance Manager in scheduling of work. Work also comes to the supervisor through the preventative maintenance program, by equipment inspections, and by breakdowns and modifications.
The majority of the supervisor's time is spent scheduling and supervising the activities of the maintenance personnel to ensure safety, optimum efficiency, and effectiveness.
It is necessary for the supervisor to adhere to the Company philosophy and rules and to ensure that safe practices and procedures are followed by their department.
Through planning and scheduling of equipment and personnel, the supervisor maintains an effective preventive maintenance program to maximize production and to reduce his/her expenditures on equipment and parts.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Familiar with OSHA regulations and various other regulations to ensure work meets pre-determined standards. He/she maintains a knowledge of new equipment, methods, and procedures to increase the efficiency of equipment and personnel.
- Ensuring the administration of an effective safety program within his/her department
- Assist in the scheduling of maintenance work to keep efficiency of all equipment and personnel at a maximum.
- Work with Maintenance Manager in setting up and maintaining the preventative maintenance program to minimize breakdowns and cost.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to achieve good Company-Member relationships.
- Maintain comprehensive history of mechanical repairs so that deficient areas can be identified and improved.
- Active participation in the personnel selection process to ensure a high degree of professional competence within the department.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications required to successfully perform this role include:
10+ years of maintenance experience or 5 years of manufacturing management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Must be self-motivated, honest, and have high ethical standards
- Possess strong team building communication, analytical and critical thinking skills
- Proficiency in use of personal computers and MS Office Suite are required
- 2 or 4 years degrees are a plus
Working conditions
The supervisor will divide their time between an office setting and operational setting which may include, hot, cold, wet, and humid conditions. They may be periodically required to work extended or varied hours to support the operation of the mill. Exposure to noise, dirt, grease, water, and sawdust is common.
Physical requirements
Sitting – able to sit for extended periods of time in an office setting
This position requires a high degree of physical mobility to include repetitious walking on hard surfaces, navigating catwalks, bending, stooping, and reaching.
Direct reports
This position has multiple direct reports. Leadership is a key requirement for success in this role.
