Energy Engineer Co-op Student

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Energy Engineer and will participate in meeting key objectives of the BC Hydro Strategic Energy Management Program at Quesnel River Pulp (QRP).  Be passionate about our environment, QRP continuously strives to reduce energy consumption.  The current focus at QRP is around energy efficiency through implementation of novel technologies. A list of projects underway include a gas reduction initiative, along with concepts and implementation for automatic closed loop process control, new applications for material transfer and handling.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Keeping current on new technologies with respect to energy efficiency
  • Managing the collection of in-house and utility meter readings
  • Assisting in energy team activities within the mill
  • Assist in the implementation of Advanced process control pilot project
  • Assist in the implementation of Demand management project
  • Participate in developing the energy model and related activities for KPI reporting
  • Data analysis and Reporting on existing and new projects
  • Working with other mill groups and additional duties as required
  • Improve awareness of technologies for Energy efficiency
    • Understand and present key concepts of new projects to various levels of mill staff as required
    • Initiate and conduct mill energy awareness surveys and related activities
  • Data Collection and Analysis
    • Collect and analyze data from mill systems to inform decision making
    • Develop KPIs or metrics to track progress and identify new opportunities for improvement
  • Support Engineering Activities
    • Troubleshoot mill equipment
    • Prepare specifications
    • Assist the Energy Engineer and Energy team to track meeting minutes, follow up on action items and participate in project planning and implementation
    • Perform gap analysis on current procedures against best practices
  • Additional Activities
    • Propose new projects or product trials and participate in developing trial plans with mill process engineers
    • Implement project planning as instructed under supervision of engineering resources
    • Stay current on state of industry through training and participation on corporate-lead initiatives
    • Manage small projects and supervise contractors if required

  • Communication Skills
    • Must be able to translate and communicate technical specifications, concepts or objectives to a variety of audiences
    • Presentation skills
    • Strong written communication skills are required for preparing reports and proposals
  • Technical Expertise and Experience
    • Basic understanding of statistics, data analysis and engineering
    • Experience working in industrial or production facilities
    • Understanding of Thermodynamics and Material and Energy Balances on an Industrial scale
    • Ability to learn and understand pulp production process
    • Ability to develop new concepts for various process related targets
    • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and optimization skillset
  • Education and Training
    • Currently enrolled in a recognized post-secondary 3rd or 4th year Engineering Program at a BC University.          
    • Microsoft Office suite with high-level proficiency in Excel, and other programming is an asset
    • OSISoft PI and Capstone PARCView software knowledge is an asset
    • Ability to work independently, as well as part of cross-functional teams
    • Previous co-op and/or work experience is an asset
    • A mechanical aptitude
    • Available for 8 months starting in January 2020
