 Eurocan
History
Eurocan’s
Pulp and Paper complex is located in Kitimat, approximately
640 kilometres north of Vancouver on the coast of British
Columbia.
The word Kitimat is derived from the Haisla word
Kitamaat, which means “People of the Snow”. Kitimat is a
beautiful and livable community representing a harmonious
balance between industry and environment. This small town
of 11,700 residents occupies a strategic tidewater location
on the great circle shipping route, providing a vital link
to Pacific shipping lanes for close to 50 years.
Nestled
at the end of the Douglas Channel, a wide and sheltered fjord
along the Alaska-Vancouver ‘Inside Passage’, Kitimat offers
a unique mix of globally-successful industry and natural
outdoor lifestyle. With a labour force of only 5,970, Kitimat’s
industrial exports represent 11% of the Provincial Manufacturing
GDP - or $1Billion annually. Kitimat represents true “west
coast living” offering a wide range of activities from 18-hole
golf on a championship course to world class deep-sea and
sport fishing.
For more than 30 years Eurocan has produced high quality unbleached linerboard and sackkraft paper for sale worldwide. The company utilizes the most advanced papermaking technology and manufacturing processes while operating in an environmentally responsible manner. Eurocan achieved ISO 9001 registration in May 1994. This valuable tool, provides assurance to customers around the world, and assists Eurocan in successfully increasing its product quality, reducing its variability, and continuously improving its quality system.
Safety Eurocan is committed to providing a safe, clean and healthy working environment. That responsibility includes maintaining safe work procedures and ensuring that all employees are properly trained in, and comply, with these safe work procedures. Eurocan’s mill safety slogan reads, "SAFETY … IT STARTS WITH ME".
Eurocan is privileged to have its very own Emergency Response Team (ERT Team) comprised of dedicated volunteer employees from all areas of the pulp and paper complex. The ERT Team members meet weekly to establish their training needs and to enhance their team communication skills through team training and mock practices in preparedness for any emergency, whether it be fire-fighting, a mill evacuation, a railcar derailment, etc.
Eurocan Employees Eurocan’s workforce, like Kitimat’s population, is multi-cultural. Eurocan’s 550 employees have a special spirit, and they cherish the family and friendly work relationship that exists within the pulp and paper facility. First and second generation families are now working side by side!
More than 450 Eurocan employees are current members of the Eurocan Social Club, a volunteer organization that provides recreational activities for its members, their families and retirees. Participating in club events provides an opportunity for employees to socialize while giving back to their community.
Charitable Donations Eurocan is a proud corporate citizen providing charitable donations to a variety of causes. With the help of its employees, Eurocan sponsors the B.C. Heart & Stroke Foundation’s “Dress Red” Campaign and Big Bike Ride, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Campaign and Relay for a Friend, the B.C. Children’s Hospital “Jeans Day”, and the Kitimat Fish Hatchery.
The company is a keen sponsor of minor sporting activities sponsoring a Kitimat minor hockey team, baseball team, two minor soccer teams, and the Kitimat Marlin Swim Club, known for its national ranking swimmers.
Lending a hand to local business through donations is a role Eurocan enjoys in the community. A substantial donation of lumber was recently made by Eurocan through its parent company West Fraser Mills Ltd. to The Kitimat Rod & Gun Club. The club, considered a local heritage site, suffered the destruction of their facilities a few years prior, but through the help of Eurocan and other sponsors, the organization was able to rebuild.
