Environmental Performance
Both the Hinton and Cariboo pulp mills completed major renovations in the 1990s and are now among the most modern kraft pulp mills. The upgrades included new technologies to significantly reduce emissions and the impact of effluents on water quality.
- All of West Fraser’s NBSK pulp is elemental chlorine-free (ECF). This means we use no chlorine gas in bleaching or processing pulp. As a result, we have reduced dioxins and furans (pulp manufacturing by-products) to below measurable levels, and significantly reduced adsorbable organic halides (AOX) in treated mill effluent.
- We constantly monitor mill discharges and effluents, and monitor the surrounding water for impacts to aquatic life and water quality.
- We continuously work to reduce pulp mill odours, and smoke and particulates.
- In 1999, Cariboo Pulp & Paper achieved certification to ISO 14001, a management tool to ensure consistent and efficient achievement of environmental objectives. Cariboo Pulp & Paper has been successfully recertified to this standard in 2004.
- Hinton Pulp achieved ISO 14001 certification in November 2000 and was recertified to this standard in 2006. Hinton first received recognition and certification for its forestry practices under the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) ForestCare program in 1996, and was successfully recertified to this standard in 1999.
