Distribution & Logistics

The majority of West Fraser’s lumber production is sold in the North American markets. About 65% of these shipments are transported by rail utilizing mostly high capacity, 73’ centrebeam bulkhead railcars. These cars have self-contained load securement systems, eliminating strap and dunnage disposal for our customers. The balance of our shipments are generally shipped by highway trucks, mainly to Western Canadian markets. West Fraser’s mills are served at origin by CN and BC Rail and access both CPRS and BNSF via origin reloads.

West Fraser also utilizes the following destination reloads in the US for local sales: Birmingham AL, Buffalo NY, Cincinnati OH, Detroit MI, Elsdon IL, Irving TX, Island Pond VT, McCullers NC, Newnan GA, Phoenix AZ, Port Canaveral FL, Savannah GA, Wilmington DE and Wilmington NC. These reloads provide the efficiency of long-haul rail with the sales advantage of "just-in-time" delivery of smaller quantities by truck.

Export Lumber & Plywood (Offshore)
West Fraser exports lumber and plywood primarily into the Japanese market. A small percentage is shipped to other Asian and Middle Eastern destinations. Most of our product is transported by tarped truck to our export re-load centre in Surrey, B.C., near Vancouver, where it is transloaded into containers or prepared for bulk shipments. By using the re-load centre, West Fraser can offer its customers highly mixed loads while greatly improving our on time shipment performance. The export re-load facility allows us to have greater control over each individual order as well as a greater selection of shipping lines and docks in Vancouver to choose from. In this respect, we are able to competitively service more discharge ports with greater frequency in Japan and other overseas markets.
