ALLOWABLE ANNUAL CUT (AAC)
The volume of timber that may be harvested annually from a specific timber tenure.

ANAEROBIC REACTOR SYSTEM
An effluent treatment system that uses microbes in the absence of oxygen to break down effluent constituents into methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

ANTI-SAPSTAIN
A wood treatment used to prevent fungus from staining the wood.

 

BAGHOUSE
An air pollution control device that captures particulate in filter bags.

BCTMP
Bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp.

BEEHIVE BURNER
A wood waste incinerator.

BIODIVERSITY
The variety of genes, organisms and ecosystems.

BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND (BOD)
A measure of the amount of oxygen that is taken up by microbes in the process of breaking down organic matter.

BOARDFOOT (FBM)
A unit of measure for lumber, equivalent to one square foot of lumber, one inch thick.

BROADCAST BURNING
Controlled burning of debris on harvested sites that reduces fire hazard and improves growing conditions for seedlings.

BURNER
Means a wood waste incinerator.

CERIODAPHNIA
Microscopic organisms used as indicators in a sublethal toxicity test.

CONIFEROUS
A type of tree which is cone-bearing and has needles or scale-like leaves, such as pine and spruce.

CYCLONE
An air pollution control device used to separate particulate from air that is removed from an industrial work area.

 

DECIDUOUS
A type of tree with broad leaves that usually are shed annually, such as aspen.

DIMENSION LUMBER
Standard commodity lumber ranging from 1 x 3's to 2 x 12's, in varying lengths.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERMIT
Permission granted by the government to emit a specified quantity of matter.

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT
A systematic examination of an industrial operation used to measure compliance with regulations, industrial good practice and environmental state of the art.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
The framework or method of guiding an organization to achieve and sustain environmental performance in accordance with established goals and objectives.

EULACHON
An anadromous smelt that inhabits the coastal waters of western North America.

 

FOREST LICENCE
A licence granted by the Ministry of Forests of British Columbia which entitles the holder to cut a specified volume of timber on specified lands.

FOREST MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT (FMA)
An agreement granted by the Alberta government which entitles the holder to establish, grow and harvest timber on specified lands.

FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
An area of forest land designated by the Minister of Environmental Protection of Alberta as a management unit.

FOREST SILVICULTURE
The process of growing and tending forests using both natural and enhanced methods.

FORMALDEHYDE
a component of resin used to manufacture plywood and panel products, and a naturally occurring component of wood.

GREENHOUSE GASES
Gases that provide an insulating effect in the earth's atmosphere, potentially leading to global climate change. These gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapour.

 

HOG FUEL
Waste wood that is used for generation of heat and process energy.

LAND AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN (LRMP)
A strategic, multi-agency, integrated resource plan. It is based on the principles of enhanced public involvement, consideration of all resource values, consensus based decision making and resource sustainability.

LEACHATE
Water that has as a component of dissolved matter accumulated as a result of passing through material.

 

m3
A solid cubic metre, a unit of measure for timber, equal to approximately 35 cubic feet.

Mfbm
Means one thousand board feet (equivalent to one thousand square feet of lumber, one inch thick), and MMfbm means 1.0 million board feet.

Msf
Is a unit of measure for MDF and plywood equal to 1,000 square feet, on a 3/4 inch basis for MDF and on a 3/8 inch basis for plywood, and MMsf means 1.0 million square feet.

MMsf
A unit of measure for MDF equal to one million square feet on a 3/4 inch basis.

MEDIUM DENSITY FIBREBOARD (MDF)
A reconstituted, non-structural panel product made from cellulosic materials by applying pressure and heat to refined and resinated fibres.

MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE
A beetle that kills pine trees by eating the living layer of circulatory tissue underneath the bark of the tree. If the infected trees are not harvested in a timely manner the infestation will kill trees at an increasing rate.

NBSK
Means Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp.

 

PARTICULATE EMISSIONS
Finely divided solid materials suspended in gas or air.

PHEROMONE
A chemical substance released by animals, including insects, which influences the behaviour or development of other individuals of the same species eg. Sexual attractants.

POWER BOILER
A boiler that uses wood waste and natural gas as fuel to produce process steam.

RECOVERY BOILER
A boiler that recovers process chemicals for re-use and creates process steam with the heat it generates.

 

SHORT TON
2,000 pounds or 0.9072 tonnes.

SILVICULTURE
The process of growing and tending forests using both natural and enhanced methods.

SLUDGE
Solid material separated from liquid pulp mill effluent during treatment.

SPF
Means spruce/pine/balsam fir species of trees.

SUSTAINED YIELD
The yield a forest can produce in perpetuity at a given intensity of management without impairment of the land's productivity, with the intent that there will be balance between timber growth and harvesting on a sustainable basis.

TIMBER SUPPLY AREA (TSA)
An area of forest land designated by the Minister of Forests of British Columbia and allocated an AAC from which non-area based timber tenures are granted.

TONNE
A unit of weight in the metric system equal to 1,000 kilograms or approximately 2,204 pounds.

TOTAL REDUCED SULPHUR (TRS)
Sulphur compounds produced in a Kraft pulping process that can exhibit a "rotten egg" smell.

TOTAL SUSPENDED SOLIDS (TSS)
The total amount of suspended solids dispersed in a liquid.

TOXICITY
A measure of lethality used to test effluent. To pass the test, 50% of young rainbow trout must survive exposure in undiluted effluent for 96 hours.

TREE FARM LICENSE (TFL)
A license granted by the Ministry of Forests of British Columbia to a licensee who undertakes to manage an area of timberland to yield an annual harvest on a sustained yield basis.

 

WESTERN HEMLOCK LOOPER
An insect that kills Hemlock, Cedar and other species of trees by eating the needles and defoliating the tree.

WOOD RESIDUE
Wood chips, shavings and sawdust produced by a sawmill.

WOOD SOAP
A naturally occurring bi-product of pulping wood chips.
