2007 Stewardship Report

Overview
As an integrated forest products company producing lumber, laminated veneer lumber, medium density fibreboard, plywood, pulp, linerboard, kraft and other grades of paper, we recognize our role in being a responsible steward of the forest.

West Fraser is one of the largest forest products companies in North America.

Our Sustainability Commitment
We understand that operations of our size and scope come with environmental responsibilities.  At West Fraser, we are proud of our environmental achievements, and of our responses to new challenges and opportunities.

We maintain a philosophy of continual improvement of our forest practices and manufacturing procedures to optimize the use of resources and minimize the impact of our operations on the environment.

West Fraser recognizes that environmental excellence is an integral aspect of long-term business success. Our Company and its employees are committed to the following:

Exceeding the requirements of all applicable environmental laws and regulations, and other requirements to which the organization subscribes.
Preventing pollution and continuing to improve our environmental performance by setting and reviewing environmental objectives and targets.
Working to protect wildlife habitat and species by implementing sustainable forest management practices.
Conducting periodic environmental audits and committing to independent, third-party forest certification of all our operations.
Providing training for employees and contractors to ensure environmentally responsible work practices.
Communicating our environmental performance and objectives to employees, customers, shareholders, governments, local communities and other stakeholders.
Reviewing our environmental policy on a regular basis to ensure that it reflects the Company’s continuing commitment to environmental stewardship.

We’ve Planted more than 1.1 Billion Trees
Our company is proud to say that over the past 50 years, we’ve planted more than 1.1 billion trees, constantly renewing the forests in which we operate.

As these replanted forests grow, they remove substantial amounts of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, contributing significantly to global warming reduction measures.

Not Resting on our Laurels
At West Fraser, we’re not satisfied to rest on our laurels.  We are constantly seeking innovative new ways to continuously improve our record of environmental achievement.

Here are some of the ways West Fraser is leading on the environmental front:

From 2000 to 2007, our Canadian operations reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 16 percent.
We have reduced our water consumption by 10,600 cubic meters per day – that’s the equivalent of 2.5 million flushes from one of the new water saving toilets.
Last year, from our offices in Canada and  the United States to Japan, we recycled 163 tonnes of used paper products, sending it to recycling centres that can turn it into new products such as paper towels, writing papers and coffee filters.
We also recycle used computer equipment, oil and process lubricants, oil filters, anti-freeze and wet cell batteries.
For more recycling and environmental milestones, see our Special Environment Section (PDF - 2,570KB).
