In 1994, West Fraser made the unprecedented decision to relinquish, without compensation, our rights to the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest on earth, the Kitlope Watershed.

Without demonstrations, bitter public debates and the usual blockades, West Fraser created an opportunity for government to dramatically increase BC's preserved public lands.

This decision, considered the largest such voluntary action in North America, will allow generations to enjoy a pristine wilderness area seven times the size of America's Redwood National Park, more than one-half the size of Germany's entire Black Forest region and equivalent to the entire forested area of the Netherlands.

We believe our decision was the right one based on the ecological significance of the Kitlope. We also believe it acts as a demonstration that our company and industry make decisions that are environmentally responsible.

We believe there is a place for preservation and we have shown that it is compatible with maintaining a strong and healthy economy through the careful harvesting of our most renewable resource in an environmentally responsible manner.

We are proud of our decision to relinquish our rights to the Kitlope and believe it helps define our Company’s policy and commitment towards environmental stewardship.
