Dr. Rick Bonar is West Fraser’s caribou expert.  With 34 years of experience as a professional biologist in BC and Alberta, the Hinton, Alberta-based Dr. Bonar conducts and reviews research on caribou and caribou habitat, and works with caribou recovery planning processes to identify the best approaches to recover caribou populations.

Dr. Bonar has a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from the University of Victoria and a Ph.D in Wildlife Ecology and Management from the University of Alberta.

In addition to his work with caribou, Dr. Bonar is Chair of the Foothills Research Institute (formerly the Foothills Model Forest) in Hinton, where the best sustainable forest management approaches are being developed.

He is also active on Alberta conservation initiatives, including the Alberta Endangered Species Conservation Committee and the Alberta Grizzly Bear Recovery Team.
